IBM Working To Develop Watson Supercomputers For Healthcare Industry.

The Tennessean (5/15) reported that most people “know IBM’s Watson for its brilliance in beating former Jeopardy! Champions,” but now IBM executives are “trying to bring the question-and-answer supercomputer’s capabilities” to healthcare. Recently, IBM representatives “came to Nashville to get feedback about potential applications” from physicians and other providers, as well health IT executives. IBM also is partnering with speech-software company, Nuance Communications, to develop a Watson that can “store and retrieve insight from medical journals and other sources of data without having to consult medical databases or the Web.” Watson would “apply logic and statistical probabilities and take into account” multiple factors about an individual patient, then either make a suggestion or provide “additional information.”
